News Conference: Victim Fair Housing Act Proposed

State Rep. Joe Parisi and Sen. Spencer Coggs held a news conference from the Assembly Parlor on April 22, 2009, to announce the introduction of the Victim Fair Housing Act. The proposal would prohibit housing discrimination against anyone based on her or his status as a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking. Rep. Parisi, and Sen. Coggs spoke at the press conference. In addition, Shannon Barry, Executive Director of Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (Madison), described victims’ experiences of housing discrimination and explained how discrimination makes it more difficult for victims to live free of violence. This legislation is supported by the Wisconsin Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assault, Legal Action Wisconsin, UNIDOS Against Domestic Violence, and the Deaf Unity Project.
