Newsmakers: Campaign 2011 Supreme Court Candidate Marla Stephens

Marla Stephens is one of four candidates for the Wisconsin Supreme Court seat now held by Justice David Prosser. The director of the Appellate Division of the Public Defender’s Office, Stephens has also been on the Judicial Council that works to improve court procedures and organization. In a Newmakers interview on January 26, 2011, Stephens said past court problems — including ethics complaints filed against two justices and partisanship — prompted her to run for the court. She also said, had she been on the court last year, she would have voted to sanction Justice Michael Gableman for a false ad he approved during his 2008 campaign against then-Justice Louis Butler. The two winners in the Feb. 15 primary will go on to the April 5 general election.
