Newsmakers: Capitol Police Chief Charles Tubbs and UW Police Chief Susan Riseling

In a March 18 Newsmakers interview in the 4th-floor Capitol emergency command center, Capitol Police Chief Charles Tubbs and UW Police Chief Susan Riseling provided remarkable details about how police responded to protests that drew more than one million people over a 33-day period. The chiefs said hundreds of officers were reminded every day to try and avoid making arrests, since the protesters were exercising their constitutional free-speech rights. Tubbs talked about why he personally got to know protesters, many of whom spent several nights in the Capitol. Riseling talked about warnings from architects that key areas of the Capitol could not  structurally hold thousands of massed protesters.
