Newsmakers: Democratic Leaders Preview Fall Session

In a Newsmakers interview on Aug. 23, the Legislature’s two Democratic leaders — Sen. Mark Miller and Rep. Peter Barca — said they hope that Republican Gov. Scott Walker makes good on his new promise to work with Democrats during the fall session starting Sept. 13. But Miller and Barca said it was not a good sign that the Legislature’s two top Republican leaders did not attend a recent meeting between the Democratic leaders and Walker on the fall session. Miller and Barca said Democrats must be consulted on new mining regulations, incentives to help small businesses grow and on other job-creation bills. Democrats said they hoped Walker and Republican leaders would not act on bills regulating abortions or narrowing the grounds to try and recall state officials.
