Newsmakers: Education Policy and Funding in the Biennial Budget

The end of federal pandemic relief dollars, record inflation, a teacher shortage and increasing student mental health needs are creating a perfect storm in school districts across Wisconsin. The final deal on the next 2 years of education funding is expected to be among the last decisions the legislature’s joint finance committee makes as they deliberate the state budget. Education advocates have been putting their hopes in the record state surplus, but can divided government deliver the help schools need? On May 8, 2023, WisconsinEye’s Newsmakers was joined by Senior Fellow at Marquette Law School Alan Borsuk, Editorial Director at the Center on Reinventing Public Education Erin Richards, and Founder and CEO of One City Schools Kaleem Caire to share their thoughts.
