Newsmakers: Exit Interview with Mark Bugher, Director of UW Research Park

In a 26-year career in and around state government, Mark Bugher held two cabinet-level jobs – secretary of the state Revenue and Administration departments – and was involved in many of the toughest decisions made by four-term Republican Gov. Tommy Thompson. In 1999, Bugher became director of UW Research Park, overseeing a 70% increase in jobs in the 14 years he led it. On the eve of his October retirement, in a Newsmakers exit interview, Bugher discussed the most important issues facing the state – funding the UW System, the future of UW-Madison, why Act 10 changes to collective bargaining had to be made, and why there will be an "uprising" someday in how Wisconsin pays for K-12 schools.
