Newsmakers: Manuel ''Manny'' Perez, Secretary WI Department of Workforce Development

Manuel "Manny" Perez, who became secretary of the state Department of Workforce Development in January, said in a March 25 Newsmakers interview that there are signs that Wisconsin’s economy is rebounding. Those signs include the return of manufacturing jobs and a dropping state unemployment rate. A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Perez is in charge of the agency that works with employers to fill jobs, provides training, enforces workers’ rights and administers Unemployment Insurance and Worker’s Compensation programs. DWD will also monitor numbers that will determine whether Gov. Scott Walker meets his goal of creating 250,000 new jobs by the end of 2014. DWD will also work with an advisory agency that will draft recommendations on how Wisconsin should repay $1.5 billion loaned by the federal government to pay unemployment benefits in a recession.
