Newsmakers: Rep. Don Pridemore

Republican Rep. Don Pridemore wants Wisconsin to follow Arizona’s lead and require officers with a "reasonable suspicion" that someone arrested or charged with a crime is here illegally to determine whether that is true. In a Newsmakers interview on Nov. 10, Pridemore said the bill he will introduce in the legislative session that begins in January would jail the suspected illegal immigrant for 48 hours. After that, if they have not produced documents proving they are in the country legally, officers must contact U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials and turn the illegal immigrant over to them. Pridemore’s bill would also repeal the City of Madison’s "sanctuary" ordinance and allow local governments to ask those jailed to pay for their care.
