Newsmakers: State of Cities and Villages

A major new study of Wisconsin’s 597 cities and villages found that debt service made up 21.7% of their spending in 2014 – second only to spending on public safety. Commissioned by the League of Wisconsin Municipalities, the study also found that the smallest cities and villages have the biggest problems: little job growth and new construction, and few candidates for elective offices. About 71% of all Wisconsin residents live in those cities and villages. The study was done by the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance.
