Newsmakers: UW System Regents President Brent Smith

New UW System Board of Regents President Brent Smith said a 5.5% tuition increase — like that recently approved for the 2012-13 school year — cannot be the norm, despite limits on how much state government can subsidize the 26-campus System in the future. In a June 14 Newsmakers interview, Smith also explained why the 181,000-student System should grow by 80,000 students to help the state's economy. Smith, of La Crosse, also explained why he opposed former UW-Madison Chancellor Biddy Martin's plan for a separate govering board for the Madison campus. Smith also said he would be interested in finding a way to let Wisconsin residents donate directly to individual System campuses.
