Newsmakers: Wisconsin's Tobacco Crop

Larry Oberdeck, of Edgerton, is a third-generation tobacco grower who has watched most of his fellow Wisconsin tobacco growers stop growing the controversial crop. But, in a Sept. 5 Newsmakers interview on his and a friend’s farms, Oberdeck talked about the health debate over the crop, the withdrawal of the federal government from regulating industry, and how it has been a reliable source of cash for his family farm – especially with the price now at about $1.90 per pound. Oberdeck even took his doctor’s advice and stopped chewing tobacco like he grows a few years ago. But, if marijuana is ever legalized, Oberdeck added, “We’d probably try to grow it.”
