Newsmaker: End of the ''Progressive Era?"

Between 1900 and the 1930s, the Progressive Party reshaped Wisconsin and the nation. Those reforms included primary elections, the inheritance tax, personal income tax, workers’ compensation and unemployment insurance. In a Newsmakers panel taped on Nov. 17, three political veterans — UW-Madison History Professor John Sharpless, Democratic activist Ed Garvey, and former Republican Congressman Scott Klug — talked about the Progressive Era’s legacy and whether it survived the Nov. 2 elections sweep by Republicans.
