Newsmakers: Campaign Spending with Mike McCabe
Spending on Wisconsin elections tripled — from $122.9 million in the 2006 and 2008 election cycles to $376.6 million in the 2010 and 2012 election cycles — Mike McCabe, executive director of the non-profit Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, said in a Newsmakers interview on Dec. 17. McCabe said the biggest reasons for that increase was about $137 million spent on recall elections, including the recording-breaking $81 million spent on the recall election that Gov. Scott Walker survived. McCabe said one of the biggest reasons for the spending jump was the Citizens United ruling, which allowed third-party groups to solicit large anonymous donations that paid for ads that dominate campaigns.
