Newsmakers: Deer Hunt of 2011

More than 226,000 deer were harvested during Wisconsin’s 9-day gun hunt that ended on Nov. 27, a 3.6% increase over last year. In a Newsmakers program on Dec. 2, three experts — DNR official Tim Lawhern, Conservation Congress Secretary Lee Fahrney, and Wildlife Federation Executive Director George Meyer — discussed how abolishing the "earn a buck" rule, and the gradual recovery of the herd, made for a successful hunt that was the third safest in Wisconsin history. But they also noted how the the old "deer camp" mentality has been replaced by hunters who devote only a weekend to the sport and why the 2011 harvest is 18% less than the number of deer killed in 2008.
