Newsmakers: Department of Natural Resources Secretary Cathy Stepp

In an Aug. 30 Newsmakers interview, Natural Resources Secretary Cathy Stepp said the experimental agreement that turned DNR into an "enterprise agency" will speed up decisions on permits, not jeopardize air and water quality, and give new authority to regional agency professionals. Stepp also said current mining rules are outdated, so DNR, the Legislature and Gov. Scott Walker should agree on a new package of regulations that balance jobs and the environment. Stepp also offered her first reaction to the "Wisconsin’s Changing Climate" report issued earlier this year predicting how the warming climate is likely to affect future average temperatures, average snowfall and precipitation, runoff problems, crop production and fishing.
