Newsmakers: Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Scocos on Budget Proposals

In an April 8 Newsmakers, Veterans Affairs Secretary John Scocos said the governor’s proposed budget would help Wisconsin’s 407,000 veterans in these ways:

• Take over two specialized programs that place vets in jobs.

• Spend $15 million, and hire 150, to expand care at the King and Union Grove homes for veterans who now average 86 years of age.

• Expand Union Grove and Spooner cemeteries.

• Give grants to veterans who want to start their own businesses.

Sec. Scocos said Wisconsin veterans have an unemployment rate of 8.4% — above the state average of 6.2%.
