Newsmakers: DWD Secretary Reggie Newson

Department of Workforce Development Secretary Reggie Newson said Gov. Scott Walker's goal of creating 250,000 new private-sector jobs by 2015 is still possible, although the number of jobs created in 2011 was far below the pace necessary to realize that goal. In a Newsmakers interview on Feb.16, Newson talked about how to improve the 44% employment rate for Milwaukee-area African-American males between the ages of 16 and 64. He also said the $1.2 billion that Wisconsin owes the federal government for unemployment benefit loans and interest could be repaid within three years. A Milwaukee native, Newson was named DWD secretary on Oct. 24, 2011.
