Newsmakers: Former Gov. Pat Lucey

Democratic Gov. Pat Lucey worked with Republican legislators in 1971 to create the merged 26-campus University of Wisconsin System — a merger Lucey still considers a top achievement of his six years (1971-1977) as governor. In a Newsmakers interview in his Milwaukee home on March 16, Lucey criticized Republican Gov. Scott Walker’s plan to create a separate authority to run UW-Madison. Lucey also said Walker, instead of pushing through the Legislature a law letting public employee unions negotiate only cost-of-living raises, should have worked with union leaders on how to fix the $3.6-billion deficit state government faces through mid-2013.
