Newsmakers: Former U.S. Representative Dave Obey

Democrat Dave Obey represented northwest Wisconsin in the U.S. House for 41 years — including serving eight presidents and playing a key roll in fixing the nation’s recent financial crises. In a Newsmakers interview on the UW-Marathon County campus on Jan. 28, Obey talked about how the economic stimulus package he helped craft as chairman of the Appropriations Committee, and bills that bailed out the car manufacturing and financial industries, helped stave off a Depression-like collapse. Obey also talked about how critical health-care reform is to the nation’s future, what President Obama must do to win re-election 2012, and why he passed up a chance to run for the U.S. Senate. He also said he has no regrets about not seeking re-election last year.
