Newsmakers: Mining in Northern Wisconsin – Bad River Tribal Council

Leaders of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa agree: The open-pit iron mine proposed by Gogebic Taconite in Ashland and Iron counties threatens the water that runs through their reservation — water they rely on for fishing, their fish hatchery and their wild rice. In a Newsmakers interview Oct. 11 on the shore of Lake Superior, five tribal leaders said the mine endangers the "way of life" of tribal members and they will do all they can to stop it. Leaders interviewed were Tribal Chairman Michael Wiggins Jr., Treasurer Etta Burns and Tribal Council Members Cherie Pero, Pete Lemieux and Eldred Corbine.
