Newsmakers: Mining in Northern Wisconsin – Mining Opponent Bill Heart

Standing on a rock beside the Tyler Forks trout stream in Iron County that he loves to fish, Bill Heart said in a Newsmakers interview on Oct. 11 that the proposed Gogebic Taconite open-pit iron mine must not be approved. A leader of the Mining Impact Coalition of Wisconsin and Trout Unlimited, Heart said the mine would ruin streams and groundwater in Iron and Ashland counties. Heart said he knows northern Wisconsin needs jobs, but the environmental risks posed by a mine that would be more than 4 miles long and up to 1,000 feet deep are too great.
