Newsmakers: Public Employee Union Leaders

In a Sept. 7, 2011, Newsmakers interview, presidents of three public employee unions reacted to nine historical summer recall elections that targeted state senators — elections won by five Democrats and four Republicans. Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin President Mahlon Mitchell, Wisconsin Education Association Council President Mary Bell and American Federation of Teachers Wisconsin President Bryan Kennedy said Democratic recall candidates they supported ousted two Republican senators, although Republicans will still control the Senate by a one-vote margin. All three also said their unions had not yet formally committed to participating in the potential recall of Republican Gov. Scott Walker next year and refused to say, if there is a Walker recall election, which Democrat should run against him.
