Newsmakers: Recall 2011 – Candidate for 30th Senate District, David VanderLeest (R-Green Bay)

David VanderLeest, the Republican candidate in the July 19 recall election for Democratic Sen. Dave Hansen, said in a July 12, 2011  interview that the biggest issue in his campaign is Hansen’s decision to leave the state in February to avoid voting on the governor’s changes in collective bargaining for public employees. VanderLeest said Green Bay-area residents in the 30th Senate District were outraged by Hansen’s decision to join his fellow Senate Democrats in Illinois. VanderLeest said he supports the governor’s weakening of collective bargaining for public employees. The Republican also said Hansen’s refusal to debate him prevents voters from learning about the differences between them, including VanderLeest’s support for the right to carry concealed weapons and his opposition to abortion. Although badly out funded and unable to run any TV or radio ads, VanderLeest said his army of volunteers will win the recall election.
