Newsmakers: Secretary Mark Gottlieb – Dept. of Transportation

Transportation Secretary Mark Gottlieb is the first engineer to run that agency in about nine years and, as a Milwaukee-area lawmaker for eight years, knows many of the issues firsthand. In a WisconsinEye Newsmakers interview in his office on Jan. 21, Gottlieb said the agency must balance limited resources with the need to refurbish Milwaukee’s Hoan Bridge, rebuild suburban Milwaukee’s Zoo Interchange (expected to cost $2.3 billion) and designing long-term projects recommended last year by the Transportation Projects Commission. Those projects include widening I-94/39 between Madison and the Illinois border, which is projected to cost about $1 billion. He also said DOT faces a $30-million deficit in the budget year that ends June 30.
