Newsmakers: Sen. Lena Taylor (D) & Rep. Garey Bies (R) on Law Enforcement Training Legislation

Two legislative leaders, Democratic Sen. Lena Taylor of Milwaukee and Republican Rep. Garey Bies of Sister Bay, explained in an Oct. 3 Newsmakers why they plan to push a bill updating training and accountability standards for Wisconsin law enforcement officers. The veteran legislators said their bill would require that training include standards for cultural, mental and physical health issues. Bies, a Door County Sheriff’s Department officer for 30 years, said current standards may be 20 years old. Taylor said the bill also resulted from new details about the 2011 death of a Milwaukee man in custody in the back of a squad car.
