Newsmakers: Senator-Elect Van Wanggaard

On Jan. 3, retired Racine police officer Van Wanggaard will be the sixth state senator from the Racine area in 20 years. In a Newsmakers interview on Dec. 8, the Republican said 21st Senate District voters elected him to work on job creation, controlling spending and cutting taxes. To fix the $3.3-billion budget deficit that looms by mid-2013, Wanggaard said state spending should be frozen. He also said the proposed KRM commuter rail line between Kenosha, Racine and Milwaukee is dead, because it would not attract enough riders and Racine County residents will not support any sales tax increase to pay for it.
