Newsmakers: Senator Fred Risser

Democratic Senator Fred Risser, of Madison, was the only legislator who voted — in 1959 — to give public employees in Wisconsin the right to join unions and bargain collectively. Wisconsin was the first state in the nation to give them that right. In a Newsmakers interview in Illinois on Feb. 22, Risser explained why he and the 13 other Senate Democrats left the state to block Republican Gov. Scott Walker’s bill to take away those "rights."
