Newsmakers: State Superintendent Tony Evers
In a Newsmakers interview on Dec. 6, Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Evers explained the new school-aid funding plan he will push the new Republican leaders who take office next month pass to approve. Evers said it would redirect $897 million in current tax credits as general state aid for schools, guarantee $3,000 per student in aid statewide, and begin a new “low-income” weighting program for children who qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. His plan also asks for $319 million in school aids in the fiscal year that begins on July 1, 2012, but Evers refused to say where elected officials should come up with that additional aid. Evers also said he would accept removing limits on Milwaukee’s School Choice and on “virtual” schools.
