Newsmakers: WI Department of Safety and Professional Services Secretary Dave Ross

Dave Ross is secretary of an important but little-known state agency, the Department of Safety and Professional Services, that oversees 350,000 professional licenses a year — including health-care professionals like doctors, pharmacists and nurses. In a Nov. 14 Newsmakers interview, Ross talked about how the agency has also absorbed regulatory programs like reviewing building blueprints and checking gasoline octane ratings that used to be done by the old Department of Commerce. Ross discussed how 132 professions are regulated by 64 boards, commissions and advisory committees.
