Campaign 2010 Newsmakers: Government Accountability Board Director Kevin Kennedy

Kevin Kennedy, director of the Government Accountability Board that administers elections, says the next governor and Legislature must decide within a year when to hold Wisconsin’s 2012 primary election. In a Newsmakers interview on Nov. 5, Kennedy said federal law requires a 45-day window for soldiers to cast ballots — a timetable that will end the state’s traditional September primary before November general elections. In 2012, Wisconsin will also hold a spring presidential primary, in addition to the November presidential election. The most likely dates for the 2012 partisan primary are June or August, Kennedy added. The 31-year veteran of Wisconsin elections also said he does not support abolishing the same-day registration law.
