Newsmakers: Changing MATC's Governing Board

The bill (SB 275) of Republican Sen. Glenn Grothman to rework how the governing board of Milwaukee Area Technical College touched off a controversial firestorm in the final days of the 2011-12 legislative session, which ended last week. One in six of every technical college student statewide attends MATC. When Grothman and other Republicans sent the Assembly a bill Democrats said favored businesses, Assembly Democrats held up adjournment of the Assembly for more than 24 hours by introducing 70 amendments. Grothman and a key Democratic leader, Rep. Sandy Pasch, discussed in a March 22 Newsmakers the compromise that finally allowed the bill to pass. Under it, six of the nine current members of the MATC board will be reappointed. Legislators said that deal will not jeopardize MATC’s federal license to operate its public TV station.
