Newsmakers: Federal and State Mortgage Settlement

Wisconsin’s share of the $25-billion national mortgage settlement will be about $140 million, but exactly how much of that will go to Wisconsin homeowners and those who lost their homes? Two state officials who worked closely on the settlement — Assistant Attorney General Steven Means and Peter Bildsten, secretary of the Department of Financial Institutions — answered those questions in a Newsmakers on Feb. 29. Any current or past homeowner who had loans with the five companies covered by the settlement — Ally/GMAC, Bank of America, Citi, JP Morgan Chase and Wells Fargo — should go to the Department of Justice Website to find phone numbers they can call to get information on how they might be helped by the settlement.
