Newsmakers: Proposed Legislative Redistricting

Panelists in a July 14 Newsmakers on reapportionment — the every-10-year redrawing of boundaries for U.S. House, state Senate and Assembly seats — made three separate points. Attorney James Troupis, who has worked with Republicans for 30 years on the issue, argued that the GOP plan scheduled to pass the Legislature next week is constitutional. But Andrea Kaminski, executive director of the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin, said quick action by the Legislature will void new ward and district lines being drawn by local governments. And, attorney Rebecca Mason, who represents voters and ex-Democratic legislators, said federal judges who have drawn the lines for 30 years will be asked to rule on whether the  redistricting plan that passes the Legislature violates the constitutional right to vote.
