Newsmakers: Secretary of Tourism Stephanie Klett

In a Newsmakers interview on March 29, Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klett said large Capitol protests between mid-February and mid-March caused some potential visitors to cancel those plans. Klett said her agency’s marketing budget would go up by 11% next year – from $9.97 million to $11.1 million, under Gov. Scott Walker’s proposed budget. Klett said a cut in that marketing budget in recent years hurt tourism, which fell to a $12-billion industry last year. Klett also said 25% of Wisconsin tourists come from northern Illinois and the Chicago-area and they visit for an average of four or more days. She also said Wisconsin tourism has had five different slogans in recent years, which blurred the state’s brand.
