Newsmakers: U.S. Professor of the Year Teri Balser

Teri Balser, a UW-Madison soil science professor, reinvented her teaching career by listening to undergraduate students – changes that made her such an effective classroom teacher she was recently named U.S. Professor of the Year for public universities. Balser said she loves teaching undergraduates, which sets her apart on a campus that receives $1 billion a year for graduate research. Soil has always fascinated her because it involves “living things,” Balser said in a Newsmaker interview in her UW campus classroom on Dec. 2. She said many regions of Wisconsin have “well-behaved soil,” because they can be easily analyzed.
