Newsmakers: UW-Madison Provost on Affirmative Action Admissions

UW-Madison Provost Paul M. DeLuca is fiercely proud of the school’s effort to recruit qualified minority students — efforts denounced in a contrpversial Sept. 13 report by the Center for Equal Opportunity. Although Center officials said 2007-08 records show blatant discriminatory admission practices that favor Hispanics and African-Americans, DeLuca said in an Oct. 20 Newsmakers interview in his Bascom Hall office that the campus must do more to achieve a goal of 15% minorities. DeLuca explained the "holistic" process that UW officials use to admit minorities likely to graduate.. Campus diversity — especially in a state with a relatively low number of minorities — is part of UW-Madison’s mission, DeLuca added.
